Since they’ve gone this far why didn’t they add a smiley on the mushrooms as well.
@peter this ad is an insult even for mushrooms :D

  • kre8tive

Maybe Hazem and Marina were having mushrooms when trying to think of an idea.

    Mushroomheads, Lol

  • Ismael

weak ad for such a great day

  • http://www.bloganubis.com Louai Alasfahani

This ad reflects the lack of cultural understanding and represents an insult to Islam and the majority of the muslim locals and residents of Kuwait. Reminds me of http://bloganubis.com/2009/03/19/omg-she-is-so-sexy/

  • http://www.bloganubis.com Louai Alasfahani

One more thing; where was this published?

  • kre8tive

I doubt it was published though.

  • http://www.bloganubis.com Louai Alasfahani

so if it is not published (Ghost/Scam) then what is it doing on this blog?!!!!! such ads have caused a lot of damage already.

  • http://arabcrunch.com Gaith

Ya it is an insult to Islam the people who designed it even not Muslims or ignorant “Muslims” Fiter is from the word breaking the fast, but also in Arabic means mushrooms BUT in Eid EL Fiter it only means breaking the fast.

they should read what Allah SWT says”

    (( قُلْ أَبالله وآياته وَرَسُولهِ كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَهزءون * لا تعتذروا قد كفرتم بعد إيمانكم )) سورة التوبة

People who work on Advertising or PR in this region should know Arabic and Islam plus the culture, other wise they will be a big damage to their clients and instead of promoting them they ll bring them backslash and PR damage

  • Magnetic

Gaith, lets keep religion out of this as they clearly meant no insult, speaking as a concept this is not good, a failed attempt to be humorous, yet again this emphasizes the dilemma advertising in the middle east is facing from agencies with personnel that are not well educated about the sensitivities in dealing with such cultural and religious issues

  • http://arabcrunch.com Gaith

Magnetic: we can not keep religion out of this, bc it is about religion Eid Al Fitar is an Islamic religion which is religion. whether they meant or did not mean an insult . The damage is already done. and again you can not be humorous about Islamic issues as the ayah above says.

I also agree with u, there is an English company that specializes in advising companies how to be sensitive about cultural issues, I ll email him.

To say this ad is insulting is going way too far. I think the idea is cool but not creative, and the implementation is poor. They could have had some proper shrooms there and better visuals, not plain button mushrooms.

Why can’t people relax and be more tolerant? Remember, there is no absolute truth in this world. Everything is open to questioning and different opinion. We can’t go hammering others for their opinion. No one is asking you to admire it. You can hate it. You can decide not to deal with the company. But you can’t stop them from their own expression and creativity. I am not saying it is creative, but it is their own take and it is legitimate.

This gated approach to what can be expressed and not by the Islamists is not going to advance our nations. It hurts Islam and religion mainly, and gives people less reasons to believe in religion. What is sad is that Islamists are acting in the same approach as in anti-semitism. It has that under-estimate of people’s intellect and brain power.

People are smart no matter what their backgrounds. People know who is being offensive, unreasonable and unfair. There is a sense of relativity to everything.

All said, I think it is a lame ad. Insulting to culture and religion? No. Creative? No. Well implemented? Absolutely No. Hilarious? Yes.

  • ansaihi

    Magnetic: he got you buddy!!
Gaith: I disagree with you a bit… I don’t wanna open a religious discussion here, but i wanna say some thing tough:
in the ad, their humor is kind of sarcastic about the word “fitr”, I agree with you, but this does not mean you can be humorous when talking about eid.. i just think there’s a diffrenece between “humor” and “sarcasm”.
I agree with you on the rest of your post.

by the way: the photography is fantastic. where did they find such clean mushrooms?

  • Abu Ali

The Kavli: A fully Integrated ST*P*D Agency

Gaith and ansaihi, guys you both missed my point, we should not give this matter more than it really deserves by referring to verses from the holy quran, we all agree that the ad is bad and insensitive to local values – that we as an advertising community should take into consideration.

I’m only worried about the possibility of voluntarily imposing more taboos than actually exist by culture or values just to be on the safe side, which may lead to gradually lowering an already low ceiling of flexibility within the industry driven by the fear of misinterpreting ads into something else,

and I’m not saying more we don’t want this to turn into a religious discussion after all.

    GUYS STOP!

  • eh

    f*cken ad.

  • http://www.bloganubis.com Louai Alasfahani

The Kavali should really stop their practice of scam/spoof/copycat ads. this is not the first time they do such work, here is a link http://bloganubis.com/2008/03/27/kavli-alghanim-industries/ and yet another link http://bloganubis.com/2008/03/17/just-do-it-ad/ now they should practice what they preached in their own ad “think before you sink”. this kind of work does not do them, us or anybody else in the advertising industry any good.
