Gulf News was founded in 1978 as tabloid format newspaper and was re-launched as a broadsheet in 1985 under the present management, and has grown steadily ever since. The paper was first redesigned in 1992 and then introduced a narrower page size in 1995.

In 2003 Gulf News joined an elite group of dailies around the world that have welcomed the importance of visual journalism as integral part of the news.
