Description:

“Are guys on quadbikes really the best representation of modern life in the Gulf?” Till Hohmann, Executive Creative Director GCC Region, Memac Ogilvy & Mather group of companies.

arabianEye, in conjunction with the Emirates Foundation, cordially invites you to an evening of topical debate, which will examine the media’s representation of life in the United Arab Emirates. Among the issues that will be addressed during this timely and important discussion are:

  • How much of UAE life is accessible to the western media gaze and how accurate is that description?
  • How does one visually define national identity in the UAE?
  • How do we overcome the cultural stigma of appearing in photos?
  • Does the current depiction of Emirati life in the media affect local culture?

Giving their opinions on these and other questions will be senior regional media representatives from a cross section of UAE society, including:

  • Alia Al Shamsi, a local photojournalist and a winner of the Qatar Al Thani Awards in 2004
  • James Langton, Deputy Editor of The National on Saturday
  • Nezar Andary, a film director, producer, writer and critic, who completed his doctoral work on the representation of Arab history in film and literature
  • Rami Farook, a member of the Sheikh Mohammed Establishment for Young Business Leaders
  • Till Hohmann, Executive Creative Director for Memac Ogilvy & Mather, GCC.
