Jordan launches third annual campaign to promote press freedom

The Jordan Times reports that the Centre for Defending the Freedom of Journalists (CDFJ) has launched its third annual campaign to promote press freedom as a social right. The objective of the campaign is to influence public opinion as part of the reform process in Jordan, according to a statement by the centre's president Nidal Mansour.

Web encyclopedia to increase amount of Arabic content online

The Talal Abu Ghazaleh Organization is set to launch an online encyclopedia in 2012. The 'Wikipedia-like' encyclopedia will cover a range of topics and will boost the amount of Arabic content on the web. "There is a shortage of Arabic content on the web. The encyclopedia we will launch next year aims at increasing Arabic content taking into account the values and cultures of Arabs and Muslims," said Talal Abu Ghazaleh, chairman and CEO of the organization. According to Google, only 2% of web content is in Arabic, although Arabic speakers account for 5% of global Internet users.

The Jordan Times has reported that the Jordanian government responded to Al Jazeera’s claims regarding the World Cup jamming on Saturday, and asked the satellite channel to provide the documents that claim Jordan was behind jamming the broadcast of several matches. The government has urged the channel to send a team of experts and officials from Al Jazeera to examine the facts. The official added that the allegations are baseless and unacceptable, and that the government will not allow any party to harm the reputation and image of Jordan.


ART intends to lay off 120 employees at Jordan Media City

According to a Jordan Media City official, The Jordan Times has reported that ART has already informed 120 of its employees that their services were no longer required and that they would be discharged. A senior Al Jazeera official said the channel will continue to cover the Jordan Professional Football League despite reports posted on the Internet that suggested otherwise.
