On Sunday at 8pm(UAE time)Sky News Arabia, the multi-platform 24-hour Arabic rolling news channel, broadcast for the first time to over 50 million homes across the Middle East and North Africa.

Sky News Arabia, the 24-hour Arabic language news channel, is set to go live across the Middle East and North Africa today at 19.00 Mecca time (20.00 in the UAE, 18.00 in Cairo, and 16.00 GMT). The channel will broadcast via free to air satellite on transponder 15 on Arabsat Badr 4, transponder 14 on Nilesat 201, and via IPTV in the UAE on either Etisalat's eLife service or Du TV. OSN will also carry Sky News Arabia via its satellite-based pay-TV platform across the Arab world.

The launch of 24-hour Arabic language breaking news channel Sky News Arabia on May 6, 2012 is set to reach television households across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region following the signing of distribution deals with a number of premium television platforms, including OSN and the Abu Dhabi TV Network in High Definition and the EtisalateLife TV and du IPTV platforms in Standard Definition.

BSkyB, which has built its British pay-TV business on its soccer rights, could face Qatari group Al Jazeera when English Premier League rights are renewed this summer. Al Jazeera has recently expanded aggressively in French soccer rights, prompting speculation that the network will be bidding to obtain English Premier League rights as well. "Al Jazeera are ambitious, wealthy and acquisitive, but as of now they have concentrated all their efforts on buying rights in France," said Simon Johnson, a consultant with the Sports & Media Group at Charles Russell.

Zawya Dow Jones reports that U.K. pay television operator British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC (BSY.LN) said Monday it has struck a joint venture with a private investment company owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan to launch a free-to-air Arabic-language news channel across the Middle East and North Africa region from 2012.
