According to industry experts, brands in the Middle East have yet to harness the power of social media. "In terms of where we are compared to the rest of the world we are still playing catch up. Brands are using social media. But the question is how they are using it. It's one thing to get up on Facebook and start an account; it's another thing to say you're using social media within a business framework," said Preethi Mariappan, head of digital arts, TBWARAAD.

Yahoo’s Business & Human Rights Program and Yahoo Maktoob hosted the first “Change Your World!” summit on women and social/digital media in Cairo on Wednesday. The summit gathered women in leadership roles from across the MENA region. The summit focused on technology, Internet and social media platforms, and their role as tools that can be used to create positive change throughout the region.

According to Elie Khouri, the chief executive of Omnicom Media Group in the Middle East and North Africa, television ad spend will decline by 5% in 2012. Khouri said that multinational advertisers are becoming increasingly cautious when it comes to regional TV advertising, and this would suppress TV revenues. "I estimate it's going to be down by 5% this year. Multinational clients are holding back."

Yahoo!’s Business & Human Rights Program, and Yahoo! Maktoob, and in partnership with Vital Voices, hosted the first “Change Your World!” summit on women and social and digital media in Cairo on January 18.

The first day of the Levant digital media event, the mediaME Forum:2011 that is being held in Amman, has successfully ended following very exciting and engaging panels and sessions presented by key industry figures from across the region. The first day, which has gathered over 300 delegates, opened with welcoming words from Zeid Nasser, the founder of mediaME.com and CEO of MediaScope, followed by a Keynote speech from Joud Nawar, the media research manager at Ipsos.
