Google has launched a local version of its popular video platform, with the domain YouTube.co.ae. The local site was launched on Sunday. The site’s homepage features the most popular videos in the UAE, along with videos that are rising in popularity. The move aims to generate more local content.

A 'halal' social networking site will be launched during Ramadan. The site, called 'Salamworld', is said to be an Islamic alternative to the popular social networking site Facebook. The site will be kept free of all things that are forbidden in Islam. The site's promo stated that "by filtering out harmful content, and by making the content uphold and respect family values, we confirm to the requirements of Muslims throughout the world".

According to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the number of Internet users increased dramatically during the last three years. The number of users rose sharply from 310 million in 2008 to 568 million in 2009 and from 958 million in 2010 to 1.4 billion users in 2011. The increase could be credited to the increase in social networking, as Facebook users went from just 100,000 in 2008 to 300 million in 2009, 500 million in 2010 and 750 million in 2011.

According to emirates24/7, the government of Dubai have launched new efforts to lure the young generation into broadcast media, which is one of the fastest-growing industries in the region.As part of that initiative, the Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) organised lectures for a group of students from the UAE University over a two-day visit. The students' tour came as part of the DMI's efforts to position the broadcast media as a suitable career choice.
