According to participants in the 'Social Media Networks and How it is Affecting UAE Society' seminar organized by the Dubai Judicial Institute, social networking websites have become "sources of rumours and false information and efforts must be made to combat the misuse of these sites." As a result, the UAE could criminalize the 'misuse' of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) has announced the launch of a new media service that allows passengers on board all FlyDubai flights to browse both Al Bayan and Emirates 24|7 newspapers on the screen of their seats. "The new service will allow the passengers to follow the latest news in both Arabic and English" said a DMI representative.

Emirates 24|7 reports that telecoms authorities in the UAE are working on ways to make Skype available in the country, according to a statement by Mohamed Al Ghanim, Director-General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), during a Customer Advisory Board (CAB) forum organised by UAE operator du in Dubai. The event aimed at addressing and discussing key issues and trends in customer behaviour and expectations.

Emirates 24|7 has reported that Facebook has around two million users in the UAE while Middle East accounts for 15 of the total 500 million users, Director of Market Development Randi Zuckerberg speaking at Gitex Global Leaders Summit on Sunday. She spoke about privacy and its priority for Internet social networking sites like Facebook, emphasizing on the importance of feedback from users for finding ways to best control it.
With UAE's population estimated to be at around 7.5 million, that would mean a little over 25 per cent or quarter of the population is on Facebook.
