Social media accounts of Al Arabiya TV compromised

Al Arabiya TV has reported that its social media channels including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have been hacked by the ‘Syrian Electronic Army’, a group who have criticized the coverage of the Syrian uprising and began to report false information. The channel's web-based email system has been also hacked, according to the source. Frequent jamming of the satellite broadcaster's signal in recent months has caused Al-Arabiya to regularly change its broadcast frequencies, incurring what it says are millions of dollars in costs.

Leading Hollywood film studio 20th Century Fox is to launch a download service to Android devices. The new download service endeavours to alleviate falling DVD sales. The studio will enable purchasers of its Blu-ray discs to download an Android-compatible digital copy of particular films from the 20th Century Fox website.

Yemeni authorities have closed Al Jazeera's bureau in Sanaa on Wednesday according to The Financial Times, the day after its offices were raided by armed men, and two of its correspondents were deported. The Arabic news channel has been shut down after the display of the graphic footage of about 50 protesters who were shot dead last, an event that triggered mass resignations from the government.

YouTube to launch pay-per-view video service

Rapid TV News reports that Google’s subsidiary YouTube has been in talks with Hollywood studios to launch pay-per-view video service by the end of this year, according to a report by the Financial Times. YouTube will also be upgrading its mobile video proposition following a study which has shown that within five years, more users will be connected to the internet via mobile rather than desktop PCs.

Financial Times has reported that British Sky Broadcasting is in talks to broadcast a 24-hour rolling news service in Arabic, based in Abu Dhabi, as part of a joint-venture with a local private investor. Entering a highly competitive market, the satellite channel would launch under the Sky News name and be the UK broadcaster's first venture into a territory outside the UK.


Murdoch calls for liberalisation of media markets in Arab world

The Financial Times has reported that during the opening of the Abu Dhabi Media Summit, Rupert Murdoch, the chairman of News Corp, has warned Middle Easters authorities to liberalise their media markets if they want to attract international media groups and further improve creativity in the Arab world. Mr. Murdoch added that Abu Dhabi could become the capital of creativity that is modern, global and fully Arab, stating that creativity was “the one economic resource that is truly inexhaustible”.
