Tablet sales to double in 2012

A new Gartner forecast projects that overall tablet sales in 2012 will nearly double from 60 million units in 2011 to 118.9 million units in 2012. According to Gartner, the iPad will continue to dominate the market, with a 61.4% share of the global tablet market this year, based on sales of nearly 73 million units. That figure is expected to grow to 170 million units by 2016.


200 million Android devices activated worldwide

During the launch of Google's 'Google Music' service, it was announced that the company has activated 200 million Android devices worldwide. According to c|net, the figure given by Google has doubled since May. 

Meanwhile, other studies have revealed that Google is activating up to 550,000 devices every day, up from 400,000 in May and 500,000 in June. A recent study by Gartner revealed that more than half of the smartphones shipped worldwide in the third quarter are powered by Google's Android.


'Google Music' is launched

Google began selling digital music via 'Google Music' on Wednesday. The new Google service offers music streaming, a music store and social media features. The Google Music store, which has been incorporated into the Android app market, already has over 13 million songs available, thanks to deals with Universal Music, Sony and EMI.


Google's Android has successful third quarter

According to a new report by research firm Gartner, Google's Android mobile OS was installed on more than half of smartphone devices sold in the third quarter.The study revealed that Android was installed on 52.5% of the total smartphones sold. According to Roberta Cozza, an analyst with Gartner, Android "benefited from more mass-market offerings, a weaker competitive environment, and the lack of exciting new products on alternative operating systems". The study also revealed that smartphone sales have increased by 42% in the third quarter, and have accounted for 26% of total mobile phone sales around the world.


Gaming expenditure to exceed $74 Billion in 2011

The gaming ecosystem is undergoing major technology and business model transitions that will last beyond 2015. Gartner, Inc. estimates that worldwide spending on the gaming ecosystem will exceed $74 billion in 2011, up 10.4 percent from 2010 spending of $67 billion. By 2015, spending will reach $112 billion.
