Google increases advertising in areas where its rivals dominate

According to industry insiders, Google has been spending big sums on TV, magazine and newspaper ads to promote new services, including its Google+ social network and Chrome Web browser. Google's ad-spending as a percentage of revenue is now similar to those of rivals Apple, Microsoft, and Yahoo. According to Kantar Media, Google spent about $213 million to advertise its own products in the U.S. in 2011, nearly quadrupling the $56 million spent in 2010.

Google has launched a beta version of Chrome for Android smartphones and tablets. "Our goal was to get all of Chrome onto Android, "said Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Google Chrome. The computer browser was launched in 2008, when Google decided to take on Microsoft, Mozilla by launching its own internet browser. Since then, Chrome has increased its browser market share. Meanwhile Microsoft's Internet Explorer share was at 22.9%. This is a significant accomplishment for Google, as Microsoft usually maintains the majority share.

Al Jazeera English can now be accessed on the new Google TV and Google Chrome apps. The new Google TV app will feature headlines and updates from the Al Jazeera Twitter feed. In the future, the app will also include a live stream of Al Jazeera's coverage. Meanwhile, the new Chrome app features desktop notifications and offline content access, as well as the ability to watch the channel's live stream.

According to Google's Paul Kinlan, the search engine is planning a series of updates and changes for its Chrome web browser. At a conference in Liverpool, Kinlan revealed that the browser will be updated with support for gamepads, webcam and WebRTC. With the addition of these gaming accessories, Google will be introducing a heightened gaming experience to the web browser. The updates are set to be launched in the first quarter of 2012.
