Study reveals that apps are still leading content portals for mobile

According to data released by Nielsen, apps are still the main way of accessing content on mobile devices, as the time spent on apps (versus mobile web browsers) has increased to 81% from 73% over the past year. The data revealed that the top five apps are Facebook, YouTube, Google Play, Google Search and Gmail, while the most dominant smartphone platforms are Android and iOS, accounting for 88% of downloads. Nielsen's data also indicated that the average time spent on apps per day has increased by two minutes to a total of 39 minutes a day.

The professional social startup BranchOut has announced that it has raised a $25 million third round of funding. The network, which operates as a Facebook application that lets users organize business connections, search for jobs, and view data about where their friends have previously worked, has hit 25 million registered users according to the company, 40 per cent of which have emerged from its mobile user base and native applications for Android and iOS devices.

Apple’s mobile Safari browser & iOS account for majority of mobile web access

According to Web measurement firm Net Applications, Apple’s mobile Safari browser and iOS operating system account for the majority of Web access from mobile devices. For the month of December, Net Applications saw 53% of mobile and tablet access to the Web coming from the Apple Safari browser, 21.66% from the Opera Mini browser, 15.87% from Android, 3.33% from Symbian and 3.05% from BlackBerry. Meanwhile, the iPhone and iPad accounted for 25% each of Web access from mobile/tablet sources, with Java ME devices 21% and Android totaling about 14%.


Android leads market in terms of mobile app downloads, exceeds that of iPhone

ITProPortal reports that a new research by ABI Research has revealed Android to being a market leader in terms of mobile application downloads, surpassing iOS despite the fact that iPhone is the bestselling smartphone to date. The study shows that the market share of the Android app download is 44 per cent, whereas iOS’s is 31 per cent.
