Study reveals that viewers engage in seven types of social TV activities per week

A new Viacom study on social media has revealed that viewers engage around seven different types of social TV activities per week. Viacom's national online survey looked at research from 1,500 Viacom Media Networks viewers aged 13-54. The research found that young viewers who watch TV with “others” score 85% among all respondents. Searching supplemental TV content was at 61%, while viewing TV show clips on social networks was at 58%.


Local social media ads in the U.S. to generate $3.1 billion by 2016

According to BIA/Kelsey's 'U.S. Local Media Forecast: 2011-2016', the U.S's social media advertising revenue will reach $9.8 billion in 2016, up from $3.8 billion in 2011,  This represents a compound annual growth rate of 21%, rising to $4.8 billion in 2012, $5.9 billion in 2013, $7.0 billion in 2014, and $8.3 billion in 2015. Meanwhile, BIA/Kelsey expects the local media segment of U.S. social media advertising revenue to grow from $840 million in 2011 to $3.1 billion in 2016. 


Brazil, India, and China lead mobile ad growth

According to a new Yankee Group study, the U.S.’s place at the forefront of mobile advertising is quickly coming to a close as ad dollars will increasingly flow to emerging markets, where mobile is the primary digital platform rather than the PC. Brazil, China, and India's mobile ad spend will grow sixfold to more than $6 billion by 2016. Meanwhile, U.S. mobile ad spending  will flatten to about half that amount in four years, while Europe will see even less expansion, as mobile ad revenue is not expected to rise considerably from the estimated $1 billion total of 2012.


Kindle Fire dominates more than half of Android tablet market

According to comScore, Amazon's Kindle Fire now accounts for more than half of all Android-powered tablets in the United Stated, reaching 54.4% from 29.4% just between December and February. The data underscores how quickly the Amazon tablet has gained traction since its November launch. While the online retail giant hasn’t specified how many units have been sold so far, analysts have estimated the company moved about 5 million in the fourth quarter.


Tablet sales expected to reach 234 million units in 2016

According to a recent report by Futuresource Consulting 'The Tablet Technology and Markets', the global tablet market is expected to sell 234 million units in 2016, up from 64 million units in 2011, and is estimated to witness a 200% increase for consumer use across the United States and Western Europe during the next two years. Mobile application downloads have also risen in 2011, with tablets accounting for 10% of total downloads. 


Advertising inventory for video-on-demand programs estimated at $1 billion

According to researchers at Rentrak, video-on-demand has witnessed exceptional growth in 2011, the fastest of any alternative TV platform, climbing 17 per cent and reaching 8.8 billion transactions. Of these transactions, free content (free-on-demand) accounted for 6.8 billion, and is now the top category, up from third place last year. According to Rentrak, "the potential value of the ad inventory in these programs is at least $1 billion."

Consumers respond to newspapers' digital ads

According to a new survey commissioned by the Newspaper Association of America, consumers who read digital newspaper content respond to digital advertising well. The survey revealed that newspapers have a wide digital reach, with 60% of respondents saying they looked at an online version from a laptop or desktop in the last week, while 26% said they looked at an online version using a smartphone, and 12% looked at an online version using a tablet.


Pinterest's referral traffic impresses marketers

Pinterest has drawn marketers' attention as the site's referral traffic has increased considerably. Last month, the site sent more referral traffic to publishers than Google and Twitter, according to a traffic report released this week. Shareaholic estimates that in February, Pinterest referred 1.05% of visitors to publisher Web sites, outpacing Google at 0.91% and Twitter at 0.82%. Pinterest also outpaced LinkedIn, Google Plus and YouTube combined.


Online newspaper 'The Daily' hits 100,000 paid subscribers

NewsCorp has announced that digital newspaper 'The Daily' has amassed 100,000 paid subscribers to date. 'The Daily' was launched a year ago. At the time, News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch said 'The Daily' would have to pull in 500,000 paying subscribers to be viable, given its weekly operating costs of $500,000. Despite the fact that 'The Daily' is currently the top grossing app, the paid subscribers level to date is well below the half-million goal set by Murdoch last year.


Facebook ads growing at faster pace than search marketing

According to Kenshoo Social, budgets for advertising on Facebook continue to grow at a faster rate than paid search. Analysis of more than 100 billion ads served on Facebook worldwide through Kenshoo Social found digital marketing agency's clients spent 109% more on Facebook in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared with the prior quarter.
