Online advertising reached $31.7 billion in 2011

According to the latest study by Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers, Internet ad spending grew 22% in 2011 to $31.7 billion. The growth rate tops last year’s 14.5%, indicating that digital advertising is continuing to grow. For the fourth quarter of 2011, online ad spending hit nearly $9 billion, up 20.4% from a year ago, and 14.7% from the third quarter.


Number of Internet users reached 1.4 billion in 2011

According to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the number of Internet users increased dramatically during the last three years. The number of users rose sharply from 310 million in 2008 to 568 million in 2009 and from 958 million in 2010 to 1.4 billion users in 2011. The increase could be credited to the increase in social networking, as Facebook users went from just 100,000 in 2008 to 300 million in 2009, 500 million in 2010 and 750 million in 2011.

According to analyst firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, a report study shows that India's media and entertainment industry is expected to grow by 13.2% over the period to 2015. Its India Entertainment and Media Outlook 2011 study found that the industry is expected to reach INR 1199 billion (£16.5bn) by 2015.

Quirkat publishes video game for Sony PlayStation

The National reports that Quirkat, a Jordanian gaming production company, will release the Basha Collection, a series of Arabic card games, for Sony PlayStation. Quirkat is the first company in the Middle East to publish a video game for the Sony PlayStation. According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, the global gaming market is expected to grow from $52.5 billion last year to $86.8bn in 2014. Gate2Play, an online payment platform, estimates there are 5 million users in the Middle East who enjoy social media gaming, each spending an average of $18 per month.


Media experts say 80% of advertising to go digital!

Emirates Business 24/7 reports that a panel of media experts at a conference at the Dubai Press Club, believe that current financial crisis, and fast changing demographics, will turn as much as 80 per cent of advertising to digital platforms.
