A new study has revealed that social media can significantly increase consumers’ TV time. According to a new study by iModerate Research Technologies, 58% of heavy engagers (consumers who share related thoughts via social networks at least 10 times a week ) report watching more live TV. “The respondents in this study consistently remarked that it makes TV more fun,” said Adam Rossow, vice president of marketing at iModerate. Rossow added that there is also “the desire to keep up with the conversation”.

Intel is developing an Internet-based TV service for consumers and has been promoting it with media companies. According to the Wall Street Journal, the world's leading chipmaker plans to create a "virtual cable operator" that would offer TV channels in a bundle via the Internet and an Intel set-top box. The chipmaker reportedly told its potential partners it wants to start the service before the end of the year.

New research by In-Stat reveals despite TV apps are not the reason for consumers purchasing connected TVs, over 60% of connected households will use a TV app at least once weekly. The Q2'11 US Digital Entertainment Database report indicates advent smart TV consumers are rapidly adopting online TV applications that are integrated into their connected TVs.

According to a report from Digital TV Research, on demand market is expected to increase in 2016. Revenues from on demand TV and film to reach $5.7 billion by 2016, a rise of 58% compared with 2010.

For the first time ever worldwide sales of connected TVs will likely exceed that of games consoles for the first time by the end of 2011. Furthermore, says Informa Telecoms & Media Samsung, LG and Sony will triumph in battle for connected home selling 52 million connected TVs whereas between them Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony will sell 37 million games consoles of varying type, including the Xbox, PlayStation and Wii respectively.
